WooCommerce shops built to rank product by product
We tackle the filter URLs, stock handling, schema clashes and catalogue speed issues specific to WooCommerce stores.
In plain English.
WooCommerce runs on WordPress, so it inherits WordPress SEO issues and adds its own. Product filters create a new URL for every combination, such as ?filter_colour=red, and sort options add ?orderby= on top. On a large catalogue that can mean thousands of crawlable URLs, and add-to-cart links like ?add-to-cart=123 can be crawled too.
Stock is the other big one. Switch on the setting that hides out of stock items and products vanish from listings, while deleting discontinued products throws away pages that may have links and rankings. We set rules for both: keep temporarily out of stock products live with a back-in-stock option, and redirect discontinued lines to the nearest replacement.
We also review the /product/ and /product-category/ permalink bases, remove duplicate Product schema when WooCommerce and an SEO plugin both print it, and keep cart, checkout and account pages out of the index. Flying Penguin builds WooCommerce plugins, so we are comfortable working in code where the settings run out.
It suits you if.
- You use product filters by colour, size, brand or vehicle
- Your catalogue has hundreds or thousands of variable products
- Discontinued products are deleted and return 404 errors
- Search Console shows rich result warnings on product pages
- Category pages are thin and product pages use manufacturer copy
What we do.
Filter and parameter control
Filter, sort and add-to-cart URLs are kept out of the crawl with robots.txt rules and canonical tags, while filtered views with real search demand can stay indexable.
Stock and discontinued product rules
Clear handling for out of stock, back-order and discontinued items, with 301 redirects to replacements so earned links are not wasted.
Product schema without clashes
One clean Product schema block per page, with price, availability, GTIN, brand and shipping details drawn from your product data.
Category and attribute pages
Product category archives get proper copy, and attribute archives are switched on and indexed only when they match real searches.
Large catalogue performance
Object caching, image optimisation and loading WooCommerce scripts and styles only on the pages that need them.
Google for WooCommerce and feeds
Your product data, schema and Merchant Center feed are aligned so free listings and Shopping ads show the right price and stock.
How it runs.
- 01
Crawl the shop
We crawl the store with parameters included, read Search Console and identify crawl traps, duplicates and stock problems.
- 02
Agree rules
Together we set rules for filters, stock and discontinued products, as these depend on how you trade.
- 03
Implement
Rules, schema, redirects and speed fixes go in on staging, with custom code written as a small plugin where needed.
- 04
Check and maintain
We watch crawl stats and indexing, and re-check after WooCommerce updates, which sometimes change templates.
Questions people ask.
How much does WooCommerce SEO cost?
You get a fixed quote once we have crawled the shop. Catalogue size, the filter plugin you use and any custom code needed set the price. Premium plugin licences, where they are needed, are paid by you at cost.
Should I delete discontinued products?
Usually not straight away. If a product page has links or still gets search visits, redirect it to the replacement or the closest category. If it has neither, a 410 or a plain 404 is fine. We set a rule so your team knows what to do each time.
Will hiding out of stock products hurt SEO?
It can. Hidden products drop out of category pages and internal links, which can weaken them in search. For short stock gaps it is usually better to keep them visible with a clear back-in-stock notice and an email alert option.
Do you work on WooCommerce stores you did not build?
Yes. A lot of this work is on stores built by someone else. We review the theme and plugins first and tell you if anything needs fixing before SEO changes are safe to make.
