Your own VPS, set up and looked after properly
A virtual private server with its own resources, arranged and managed by us.
In plain English.
A VPS, or virtual private server, is a slice of a physical server with its own allocation of processor, memory and storage. Other customers' busy sites do not slow yours down the way they can on shared hosting, and you can install the software you need instead of only what the host allows.
We arrange VPS servers with trusted infrastructure providers and manage them for you. Every server is set up with SSH keys instead of passwords, a firewall, automatic security updates and fail2ban to block repeated login attempts. Then we install the stack you need, such as Plesk, a LEMP setup or Docker.
You can choose fully managed, where we handle everything, or a lighter arrangement where your developers have root access and we look after security and backups. VPS hosting is quoted after a free call, based on the resources and level of management you need.
It suits you if.
- You have outgrown shared hosting
- Your app needs software a shared host will not install
- You want root access but not the job of patching
- You host several sites and want them on one server you control
- Your developer has left and nobody is looking after the VPS
What we do.
Hardened from day one
SSH key login, a firewall that only opens the ports you use, fail2ban and automatic security updates are set up before anything goes live.
Your stack
Plesk for easy site management, a LEMP stack for speed, or Docker for container apps. We install and configure what suits your sites.
Snapshots and backups
Server snapshots before big changes, plus file and database backups stored elsewhere, mean a mistake can be undone.
Managed or co-managed
Choose whether we run the whole server or share it with your developers, with clear notes on who does what.
Resized when needed
When you need more memory or storage, the VPS can usually be resized with a short restart instead of a full migration.
How it runs.
- 01
Scope the server
On a free call we look at what will run on the VPS and how much management you want.
- 02
Build and harden
We arrange the server, lock it down and install the stack before any data is moved.
- 03
Migrate and test
Your sites or apps are moved, tested on temporary addresses and switched over one at a time.
- 04
Manage
We keep it patched, backed up and monitored, and resize it when you need more room.
Questions people ask.
What is the difference between a VPS and shared hosting?
On shared hosting, many customers share one server's resources and settings. A VPS gives you your own allocation and your own operating system, so you can install what you need and are not slowed down by neighbours. It costs more, so we only suggest it when it is needed.
How much does a VPS cost?
It depends on the size of the server and how much we manage. We quote a monthly figure after a free call that covers the server and our management, and agree it with you before anything is set up.
Can my developer still have root access?
Yes, on a co-managed VPS. We agree who changes what, keep a log of server changes and still handle security updates and backups. On a fully managed VPS we keep root access to protect the setup, and make changes on request.
Who owns the data on the VPS?
You do. Whichever account the server runs under, the sites and data on it belong to your business. If you move to another provider, we supply full backups of the sites, databases and server configuration, and help them get everything running again.
