Squarespace SEO: where you are, the work, and where it gets you.

In plain English.

Squarespace keeps things tidy. It handles SSL, the sitemap at /sitemap.xml, basic schema for products, events and blog posts, and mobile layouts. The trade-off is control. You cannot edit robots.txt directly, the sitemap includes whatever the platform decides, and there is no plugin system to add missing features.

Most of the SEO work happens in fields people skip. Each page and collection item has its own SEO title, description and URL slug. Images need alt text, which Squarespace takes from different places depending on the block. Blog category and tag pages can create thin duplicate listings. Old URLs need mapping in the URL Mappings panel, which uses its own text-based redirect format.

Where templates fall short, we use code injection, available on paid plans above Personal, to add JSON-LD such as LocalBusiness or FAQ schema. We also review the crawler settings, which can block AI crawlers, so that choice is made knowingly instead of by default.

It suits you if.

  • Your site runs on Squarespace 7.0 or 7.1
  • Page titles in Google show your site name and little else
  • You moved to Squarespace and old links now 404
  • You run a blog, portfolio or small shop on the platform
  • You want schema but have no plugin to add it

What we do.

Page and item SEO fields

SEO titles, descriptions and slugs written for every page, blog post, product and event, plus the site-wide title format.

URL Mappings

Old URLs are redirected with 301 rules in the URL Mappings panel, one line per redirect in the format it expects.

Image alt text

Alt text is set in the right place for each block type, so images describe themselves to Google and to screen readers.

Schema through code injection

Squarespace adds basic markup itself. We add LocalBusiness, Service or FAQ JSON-LD in page header code injection where it adds value.

Collection and tag pages

We review blog categories, tags and product categories so they help visitors and do not multiply thin pages.

Crawler and visibility settings

Pages hidden from search, password pages and the AI crawler setting are checked so nothing is hidden by mistake.

How it runs.

    Audit the site

We go through every page and collection in the Squarespace editor and crawl the live site.

  2. 02

    Complete the basics

SEO fields, slugs and alt text are written and entered, with your sign-off on the wording.

  3. 03

    Add what is missing

Redirects, schema and tag clean-up are done using URL Mappings and code injection.

  4. 04

    Verify

We connect Search Console, submit the sitemap and check indexing over the following weeks.

Questions people ask.

How much does Squarespace SEO cost?

The price is fixed before we start. Squarespace sites are usually modest in size, so the work is contained. If you need code injection and are on the Personal plan, you pay Squarespace directly for the upgrade.

Can Squarespace sites do well in search?

Yes, for most small business and portfolio sites. The platform covers the technical basics. Results then depend on your content, your local signals and your links, which matter in the same way on any platform.

Why does Google show the wrong title for my pages?

Often because the SEO title field is empty, so Squarespace falls back to the page name plus site title. Google may also rewrite titles that are too long or vague. Writing a clear SEO title for each page usually fixes it.

Do you need my login?

No. You can invite us as a contributor with administrator or limited permissions from the Permissions settings. You stay the site owner and can remove us at any time once the work is finished.
