Shopify SEO: where you are, the work, and where it gets you.

In plain English.

Shopify handles a lot for you, including SSL, hosting, a sitemap and canonical tags. It also fixes your URL structure: products live under /products/, categories under /collections/ and articles under /blogs/news/, and you cannot remove those folders. SEO on Shopify means working well inside those rules.

The most common problem is duplicate product URLs. Many themes link to products through their collection, as /collections/brakes/products/pad-set, while the canonical tag points to /products/pad-set. Google then crawls two versions of every product. Tag filter pages, ?variant= parameters and filter URLs from the Search and Discovery app add more near-duplicates.

We fix internal links in the Liquid theme so they use the canonical product URL, control crawling with a custom robots.txt.liquid file, improve product and collection copy, add complete Product schema, and remove apps that inject scripts on every page. If you sell abroad through Shopify Markets, we check its subfolders and hreflang too.

It suits you if.

  • Your theme links to products through collection URLs
  • Search Console shows many "Duplicate without user-selected canonical" pages
  • You have installed apps over the years and the store feels slower
  • Collection pages are a grid of products with no copy
  • You sell to more than one country through Shopify Markets
  • Your product titles and descriptions came straight from the supplier

What we do.

Canonical internal links

We edit the Liquid templates so product cards link to /products/ URLs directly, removing a whole layer of duplicates.

robots.txt.liquid control

Shopify lets you override the default robots.txt with a template. We use it to stop crawling of filter, sort and tag combinations that waste crawl effort.

Collection page content

Collections are often the pages that rank for category searches. We add useful intro copy, buying guidance and FAQs without pushing products out of view.

Product schema and feeds

Product, Offer, AggregateRating and shipping details in JSON-LD, matched to your Google Merchant Center feed so prices and stock agree.

App and script audit

Every installed app is checked for page weight. Apps you removed long ago often leave snippets in the theme that still load.

Redirects and handles

Renaming a product changes its handle. We make sure the "Create a URL redirect" option is used and old URLs are mapped in Shopify's URL redirects.

How it runs.

  1. 01

    Review the store

We crawl the store, read the theme code, list installed apps and check Search Console coverage and Merchant Center diagnostics.

  2. 02

    Fix the theme

Liquid changes are made on a duplicate theme, previewed, then published once you are happy.

  3. 03

    Improve content and data

Collection copy, product titles, schema and redirects are updated in priority order.

  4. 04

    Monitor

We track indexing, duplicate counts and Shopping visibility, and check after theme updates that our fixes survived.

Questions people ask.

How much does Shopify SEO cost?

The quote is fixed and depends on catalogue size and how much Liquid theme work is needed. Any paid Shopify apps you decide to keep or add are billed to you by Shopify on your normal store invoice.

Can you change the /products/ and /collections/ URLs?

Not on standard Shopify, as the folders are built into the platform and only a headless build avoids them. They are rarely the cause of poor rankings. The duplicates, thin collections and slow apps around them matter far more, and those can be fixed.

Will a theme update undo your changes?

Updating to a new version of your theme replaces the code, so customisations need reapplying. We document every edit so it can be carried across, and we can do that for you when you update.

Do you need my Shopify login?

No. You add us as a collaborator or staff account with only the permissions needed, such as themes, products and online store. You never share your owner password and can remove our access at any time.
