What to tell me when you want a website built
You don't need a polished brief. Tell me what the business does, what you want the website to change and what you've already got. We can work from there.
Tell me what a good enquiry looks like
Explain who you want to hear from and what they usually need. A garage booking a repair has different questions from a builder quoting an extension. That affects the pages and the enquiry form.
If there are jobs you do not take, say so. The website can help people work out whether to contact you before either of you spends time on a conversation that will not lead anywhere.
Show me what you already have
Bring the current website address, logo, photographs and any useful wording. Say who controls the domain and hosting. If those details have gone missing, mention that at the start.
A few examples of sites you like are useful when you explain why. It might be how clearly they show prices, how the booking works or how easy it is to see completed jobs. We can use those ideas without copying the site.
Separate launch essentials from later ideas
List what must work on the first day. Put the other ideas alongside it, with a note about why they would help. That makes it easier to discuss a price and a sensible order for the work.
A simple first site may need service pages and an enquiry form. A shop or booking connection needs more detail before it can be quoted. I will ask about those requirements rather than assume they are part of an ordinary brochure build.
Agree who supplies the content
Decide who will write the service information, supply photographs and check that the claims are accurate. If you need help with those jobs, allow for them in the scope.
Use photographs and examples you are entitled to publish. Results, reviews and qualifications should be genuine. A small amount of specific information from you is more useful than several pages of claims that could describe any business.
Ask about the cost after launch
Get the build price, hosting, renewals and later changes explained together. Ask who owns the site, what support is included and how you can leave.
At Flying Penguin, eligible sole traders and businesses with up to 5 employees can discuss the £395 offer, subject to availability. Bespoke builds start from £995. I'll agree the scope and price in writing and show you a working prototype before asking for a deposit.
