Content Audit and Refresh: where you are, the work, and where it gets you.

In plain English.

Most sites carry dead weight: blog posts from years ago, near-duplicate service pages, out-of-date product guides and thin tag archives. Some still earn traffic but have slipped as facts and competitors moved on. Others pull visitors to the wrong page or compete with a better one. A content audit sorts all of it.

We crawl every URL with Screaming Frog and join it with twelve months of Search Console clicks, GA4 engagement, backlinks and conversions. Each page then gets a decision: keep as it is, refresh, merge into a stronger page with a 301 redirect, or remove. The data does the sorting, and you make the final call on anything sensitive.

Refreshing is often the quickest SEO win on an established site. Updating facts, prices, screenshots and structure on a page that already has history and links tends to respond faster than publishing a new page, especially after content decay or a core update.

It suits you if.

  • You have hundreds of blog posts and no idea which matter
  • Traffic has slowly declined with no obvious cause
  • You were hit by a Google core update
  • Old posts mention prices, laws or products that have changed
  • You are about to redesign or migrate the site

What we do.

Full inventory

Every indexable URL is listed with word count, last updated date, indexing status and the queries it ranks for.

Performance scoring

Pages are scored on clicks, impressions, engagement, links and conversions, so decisions rest on numbers instead of memory.

Decay detection

We compare year-on-year Search Console data to find pages losing clicks before the drop becomes serious.

Merge and redirect plan

Overlapping pages are combined into one stronger page, with 301 redirects mapped so links and bookmarks still work.

Refresh briefs

Pages worth saving get a brief listing what to update, add or cut, based on current search results and questions.

Safe pruning

Removal is reserved for pages with no traffic, links or business value, and is done with the right status code.

How it runs.

  1. 01

    Collect the data

With access to Search Console and GA4, we crawl the site and pull a year of performance data for every URL.

  2. 02

    Score and decide

Each page is scored and given a proposed action. We walk you through the list and agree the decisions.

  3. 03

    Refresh and consolidate

We update priority pages, merge overlaps, set up redirects and remove dead content in agreed batches.

  4. 04

    Measure

We annotate the changes in GA4 and compare performance after 90 days, so you can see what each action did.

Questions people ask.

How much does a content audit cost?

The quote depends on the number of pages and on whether we carry out the refreshes ourselves or deliver the plan alone. You get a fixed figure after a free call, and large sites can be audited section by section to spread the cost.

Will deleting pages hurt my rankings?

Removing pages that get no visits and have no links rarely hurts. Pages with links or traffic are merged and redirected instead of deleted, so their value moves to the surviving page. Nothing is removed without your agreement.

Should I just change the date on old posts?

No. Changing a published date without real updates is something Google warns against, and readers notice. A refresh means checking facts, adding what is missing and improving the structure. After that, a new updated date is honest.

How involved do I need to be?

We need access to Search Console, GA4 and your CMS, and about an hour of your time to go through the decisions. Your knowledge of which pages matter commercially, or legally, is part of getting the calls right.
